From the Classroom to the Boardroom: Why Physicians Must Become Innovators

When I was an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at UCLA, I spent a lot of time teaching residents how to be better clinicians. But I noticed a gap in the curriculum: we weren’t teaching them how to be leaders in a rapidly changing healthcare system.

Healthcare is undergoing a seismic shift. We are moving from fee-for-service to value-based care, from analog to digital health, and from siloed specialties to integrated systems. Physicians have a moral and practical obligation to be in the room where these decisions are made—whether that’s the boardroom or the investment committee.

My own path took me from academia to corporate America, and now to the world of venture capital and board governance. I currently serve on the boards of over 15 healthcare and women’s health organizations. In these roles, I’ve seen that the most successful organizations are those that include clinical voices in their strategic planning.

As the Founder of Woman Centered, LLC, I am building a business that sits at the intersection of medical education, media, and business development. My goal is to help translate clinical needs into business solutions.

To the physicians reading this: your voice is needed beyond the exam room. Whether it’s joining a board, launching a startup, or contributing to medical communications, we need your expertise to guide innovation. We cannot leave the future of healthcare to technologists and financiers alone.

Through my podcast and speaking engagements, I aim to inspire the next generation of physician-entrepreneurs. The challenges in women’s health are complex, but by collaborating—combining clinical expertise with corporate strategy and investment—we can finally build the system women deserve. Let’s connect if you are ready to be part of that change.
